Breaking Generational Curses: How to Change Your Family Legacy

How do you break generational curses?
Breaking generational curses begins by identifying destructive patterns that have been repeated through your family and intentionally choosing healthier ones. This may involve addressing unresolved wounds, addiction, unhealthy relationships, anger, shame, or other learned behaviors. For Christians, healing can also include prayer, forgiveness, repentance, renewing the mind through Scripture, establishing healthy boundaries, and allowing Christ to transform patterns you do not want to pass to the next generation.
What Does Breaking Generational Curses Mean?
Breaking generational curses means recognizing destructive patterns that have been repeated within your family and making intentional choices so those patterns don't continue through you. You may see cycles of addiction, pornography, infidelity, divorce, anger, emotional neglect, abuse, shame, unhealthy relationships, or other behaviors appearing across multiple generations.
Sometimes we inherit more than physical characteristics from our families. We also learn ways of responding to conflict, handling emotions, approaching relationships, dealing with pain, and understanding ourselves.
A child raised around anger may learn anger as a normal response to conflict. Someone raised in an emotionally disconnected home may struggle with intimacy as an adult. Addiction, secrecy, shame, and unhealthy coping mechanisms can also become patterns that children observe and later repeat.
Recognizing those patterns doesn't mean your past determines your future.
You can decide that what has existed in your family for generations will not automatically continue through you.
For Christians, breaking destructive generational patterns can become part of a larger journey of healing, repentance, forgiveness, renewed thinking, and discovering a new identity in Christ.
“May His favor be upon you, and a thousand generations. Your family and your children, and their children, and their children.”
As I sang the lyrics to this beautiful song, I couldn’t maintain my composure.
Uncontrollable tears streamed down my face, and it felt like my whole body was shaking. I heard the Lord speaking to me, and I wanted to share this in the hopes of encouraging someone else.
I heard the Lord say, “Look at your kids. You faced a crossroads in life where you and your husband had to choose the world or choose Me. You both knew that there was no in-between, or grey area, that existed anymore.
Choosing me was the most difficult path, but you both trusted that pursuing Me would yield the greatest outcome. Because of the choice you both made, your children will not see the troubled times that you faced. Choosing to break the generational curses of sexual sin in both of your lives was not easy, but you were resetting your family lineage from this point forward.”
What Are Examples of Generational Patterns?
Not every repeated family problem should automatically be labeled a generational curse. Some patterns are learned behaviors, unresolved wounds, unhealthy coping mechanisms, or relationship dynamics that have been modeled and reinforced over time.
Common generational patterns may include:
- Addiction or compulsive sexual behavior
- Pornography and sexual secrecy
- Infidelity
- Divorce and unstable relationships
- Anger or emotional volatility
- Emotional neglect
- Difficulty expressing affection
- Shame and secrecy
- Unhealthy attitudes toward sex and intimacy
- Controlling behavior
- Avoiding conflict rather than resolving it
- Unresolved trauma
- Difficulty establishing healthy boundaries
The specific behavior may change from one generation to another while the underlying wound remains remarkably similar.
For example, one generation may cope with emotional pain through alcohol while another turns to pornography, work, food, or another form of escape.
That's why healing requires looking beneath the behavior and asking:
What keeps repeating in my family, and what is underneath it?
7 Steps Toward Breaking Generational Curses and Patterns
1. Identify What Keeps Repeating
Look honestly at your family's history.
What patterns appear repeatedly in marriages, parenting, sexuality, addiction, communication, anger, relationships, or emotional health?
You cannot intentionally change a pattern you haven't recognized.
2. Understand Where the Pattern Came From
Once you've identified a recurring behavior, begin exploring its roots.
What did you learn about relationships growing up? How did your family respond to conflict? Were difficult emotions discussed or avoided? How were affection, sex, anger, forgiveness, and vulnerability handled?
Understanding where a pattern originated doesn't excuse harmful behavior. It helps explain what needs to change.
3. Address Your Own Wounds
Many destructive patterns survive because unresolved pain gets carried forward.
Rejection, abandonment, betrayal, abuse, neglect, shame, or other painful experiences can influence how you respond to relationships and difficult emotions years later.
Healing your own wounds can help prevent you from unknowingly handing them to someone else.
4. Take Responsibility for Your Part
You aren't responsible for what previous generations did to you.
You are responsible for what you do with what you've inherited.

That distinction is powerful.
You can acknowledge what happened without allowing your family history to become an excuse for continuing the same behavior.
5. Forgive Without Pretending Nothing Happened
Forgiveness does not mean denying harm, eliminating appropriate consequences, or remaining in unsafe situations.
It means refusing to allow bitterness and resentment to control your future.
For Christians, forgiveness can become part of releasing the past to God while still maintaining healthy boundaries and pursuing healing.
6. Build New Patterns Intentionally
Breaking an old pattern isn't enough. Something healthier needs to replace it.
If your family avoided difficult conversations, learn healthy communication.
If affection was withheld, practice expressing love.
If addiction was hidden, build accountability.
If anger controlled the home, learn healthier ways to process emotions and resolve conflict.
A different family legacy is built through repeated different choices.
7. Let Your Healing Become Someone Else's Inheritance
The work you're doing may extend far beyond your own life.
Your children can learn healthier ways of communicating because you learned them first.
Your marriage can experience intimacy that wasn't modeled for you.
Your family can learn that asking for help is strength rather than weakness.
The patterns passed down to you do not have to be the patterns you pass forward.

I know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that the Lord was speaking to me. He confirmed this word to me through two other individuals. Neither of them knew of the encounter I had with the Lord until after they shared their words of knowledge with me. Plus, Deuteronomy 7:9 shares the same sentiment.
“Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.”
Crossroads

My husband and I met while we were both awash in sexual sin. Neither of us was a Christian at the time. In the world, porn was an accepted norm, and we both bought into it. But contrary to secular world views, pornography did not bring us closer together.
Instead, it served to tear us apart. Years of lusting with our eyes gave way to my husband nearly having an affair. That was a wake-up call for me, and I removed every ounce of pornography from our home.

Though I was now living porn-free, my husband remained engrossed in sexual sin. His behavior, especially his temper, often became the catalyst that exposed the secrets in his life. Imagine my surprise, however, when my daughter came to me one Sunday afternoon to alert me to the fact that daddy was looking at naked women.
We were at a crossroads. Things had gone too far. Either our marriage was over, or things needed to drastically change.

Healing
The healing was not always easy. Wounds that were opened during our childhood emerged. Moments, hours, and even days were at times excruciating. We had to untangle ourselves from the beliefs that had wreaked havoc on us as individuals and as a couple. About the time that we started to feel as if the healing was complete, I was offered a job at KingdomWorks Studios.
The prospect of working for a Christian-film production company was exciting, yet deep within I felt unworthy. But somehow, even in the midst of my uncertainty about moving over a thousand miles, I knew that it was God who had opened this door for me. In hindsight, God was using this to draw me even closer to Him.
Though I believed our healing was nearing completion, God knew that I had not even scratched the surface in my personal life. I was only feeling healed because my husband was making progress and no longer triggering my past pain.
Turning Point
The first time I was introduced to the Conquer Series, a cinematic study that has helped millions of men overcome their battle to porn addiction, I realized that the healing journey was about so much more than my husband or our marriage.
I began to understand how the absence of a father during my early childhood created a deep wound in me. Clearly, I started to see how the sins of my parents had spilled over into my life. I even began to realize that I was cultivating a breeding ground of destruction for my own children, just in my thoughts and actions.

God asked me to embark on my own personal healing journey. I did not resist; I just couldn’t. The lives of my children were on the line, and I was tired of not really knowing who I was. With every fiber of my being, I pursued healing. I rose up and began declaring that I was not the sum of my past mistakes or the things done to me. And in doing so, I witnessed a strengthening in my marriage and in my relationship with my children.
Today, every chance we get, my husband and I talk about the miraculous healing journey that God brought us through. And dads, you can have the same happy ending that we are now experiencing. But you have to choose to work for it.
It’s Time
It is time to break out of the victim mentality that has been spiraling in your mind. You cannot blame everyone else for the cesspool of filth that is in your life. You are not responsible for what others may have done to you. Your job, at this moment, is simply to respond to whatever the Holy Spirit is asking you to do.
Look into the eyes of your children – young or old – and find the courage and strength to fight for them. You do not have to know where to get started, as the Conquer Series will lead you through every step of the way. And thanks to Soul Refiner, a brand-new digital streaming platform, you can get started immediately.
It’s time to break the silence, not only of the past hurts you’re carrying, but also the secret sin that’s been rampant in your life. James 5:16 tells us,
“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.”
It is my prayer that you, too, will hear the Lord tell you that you fought the good fight and changed the lineage of your family for the better. I promise the investment is worth it.

What is a generational curse?
The term generational curse is commonly used to describe destructive patterns or consequences that appear repeatedly across generations of a family. These may involve addiction, unhealthy relationships, anger, sexual struggles, shame, or other behaviors. Some Christians also use the term spiritually, although not every repeated family problem should automatically be considered a supernatural curse.
How do you know if you have a generational curse?
Look for destructive patterns that repeatedly appear across your family's history, such as addiction, infidelity, divorce, emotional disconnection, anger, abuse, secrecy, or unhealthy coping behaviors. Identifying a recurring pattern can help you understand what needs healing, but repetition alone does not prove that a supernatural curse exists.
Can Christians break generational curses?
Christians believe that transformation and freedom are possible through Christ. Breaking destructive family patterns can involve repentance, forgiveness, prayer, renewing the mind through Scripture, healing emotional wounds, establishing healthy boundaries, accountability, and intentionally developing new behaviors.
Are children responsible for their parents' sins?
Ezekiel 18 emphasizes individual responsibility rather than automatically assigning a parent's guilt to a child. However, children can still experience consequences from a parent's choices and learn behaviors that continue into adulthood. Healing involves recognizing those influences without accepting them as an unchangeable identity or destiny.
How can I stop unhealthy family patterns from affecting my children?
Start by identifying the behaviors you don't want to repeat, addressing your own unresolved wounds, and intentionally modeling healthier alternatives. Honest communication, appropriate boundaries, accountability, emotional connection, forgiveness, recovery support, and a healthy spiritual life can help create a different environment for the next generation.
