The Story
She thought she knew
the man she married
Kristina Douberly had been married to Lamar for eighteen years. She knew his voice, his habits, the sound of his truck in the driveway. What she did not know was that from the very beginning, he had been living a second life.
It started with pornography, hidden. Over the years it grew into emotional affairs, then sexual ones — woven quietly through the whole of their marriage while he sat beside her in church.
Then came the night that put their family on the evening news.
Lamar was with his affair partner when her husband found out. He came with a gun. Lamar escaped the shots. The two women in that house — his affair partner and her best friend — did not. Both were murdered.
Eight months later, when Kristina finally confronted him, the truth came out all at once: he had been unfaithful their entire marriage. The lid came off a box of lies eighteen years deep.
She sat in a church basement on a Thursday night among strangers, numb, certain she should be home tucking her sons into bed instead. She was not sure her marriage would survive the week. She was not sure she wanted it to.
“I must be the biggest idiot in the world — because he kept this from me for eighteen years.”Kristina Douberly
