The War Began in Eden

This battle did not begin with the internet.

It did not begin with magazines, movies, or smartphones.

It began in a garden.

From the beginning, God established a perfect design for man, woman, marriage, sexuality, and family.

"Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh." (Genesis 2:24, ESV)

Marriage was created to reflect covenant, intimacy, fruitfulness, and ultimately God's relationship with His people. Sexuality was never intended to be a source of shame, confusion, exploitation, or bondage. It was a gift from God to be enjoyed within His design.

But Satan's first attack was against God's order.

The serpent introduced doubt, rebellion, and the promise that fulfillment could be found outside of God's boundaries. Ever since that moment, humanity has repeated the same pattern - seeking God's gifts while rejecting God's authority.

As civilizations emerged, this rebellion became woven into entire cultures.

Ancient Mesopotamia, Canaan, Babylon, Greece, and Rome all developed systems of worship that celebrated sexual immorality, fertility cults, prostitution, and the deification of human desire. Gods such as Ishtar in Mesopotamia and later fertility deities throughout the ancient world represented more than religious figures. They reflected humanity's desire to separate sexuality from God's purposes and redefine it according to human appetites.

Scripture repeatedly records Israel's struggle against these influences.

Rather than worshiping the Creator, the surrounding nations often elevated fertility, pleasure, and sensuality to objects of devotion. What God had established as sacred became distorted into something self-serving and destructive.

The prophets consistently warned God's people that these practices were not merely cultural differences. They were spiritual corruption that pulled hearts away from the Lord.

The forms changed from generation to generation.

The rebellion did not.

What began in Eden appeared in pagan temples, royal courts, idol worship, and immoral cultures throughout history. The same spiritual forces that sought to corrupt God's design thousands of years ago continue to oppose it today.

This is why the battle is bigger than behavior.
